The Orion Publishing Group was, at the time of the GMT team’s investment in May 1994, the tenth largest book publishing company in the UK and was one of the few sizeable remaining independent book publishers. The company published titles in the popular fiction, nonfiction, illustrated, reference, children’s and classical book genres. Orion was a well-known brand name in the British publishing trade with established imprints. The company’s backlist (sales of existing titles) provided a predictable revenue stream and the management team had a substantial record of successfully identifying new and commercially attractive authors and promoting them into brand names. Orion was sold to Hachette, the French publishing house, in August 1998.
